And here is your Christmas present ! I already told you about this great youthful band some months ago, when they deserverdly featured the "video of the week" section, for months ! Now, this is time for a complete show, filmed this early december when they were exclusively invited by the Trans Musicales festival organizers for their only date in France. Made of three siblings and two friends, aged 14 to 20 (!!), they all kind of met through the Paul Green’s School of Rock network and decided to hit the road together. Talent has no age and what is particularly striking and remarkable here is that, at such an early age, they already sound like old vintage soul-rock vets, half way between Led Zeppelin (self accepted influence) and Amy Whinehouse-Betty Davis, for Baily, their yeasty and cheerful singer. This is really Im-pres-sive !! Undoubtedly, the new band of the year !! They will sure turn big if they keep on delivering such a masterly performance.
On top of their Trans Musicales show, I've added two songs from their first tour here, as a support band for The Heavy, back in february, when I first came across them. "Summertime" was just awesome that night (see below) ! Still as an extra, a special exclusive report made by a French mag when they came to Rennes, which truly proves the great interest stirred by the band, even overseas !
Lastly, any help welcome on the tracklisting as most of the songs played that night hasn't been released yet, their first album coming out early 2014. Don't miss it !! I tried to sort it out from a tracklist held by Bayli on a recent photo but ...
Anyway, Merry Christmas to you all !! I hope this is the kind of stuff you would like to find under the tree ... !

Enjoy !

Cheers !

What a band !! No doubt James Murphy's post-punk-dance-groovy machine (see the videos below for the right mix ! the first rows go crazy at 2'21 on "Movement" !) will be missed. The official "Shut up and play the hits" documentary-dvd, released in 2012,  is an awesome, energetic and witty testimony of the band's last call (a 3 hour last ever concert at the MSG !) since JM has decided to self dismantle it in 2011. Even if their influence on music over the last ten years is unquestionable and acclaimed both by the public and the critics, they have never really turned mainstream, making the band even more precious for those who knew what the stuff was like, particularly live !! By the way, the evidence that the band's memory still lives on on many minds also lies in the great forthcoming photobook, out this december (preview : here), that goes over the entire group's life since the early 2000.
As for this dvd, the band is in great shape at Lowlands festival, this late august 2010. Quite a lot of talk from James and a special anniversary. I've tried to fill it to the brim with additional footage from Glastonbury festival shot in the golden setting daylight of the day, the sun nicely bouncing over Pat Mahoney's cymbal.

Enjoy !

Cheers !

A humble tribute to one of the greatest rock'n'roll goddess of our time. A particular place too where not so many happened to sing and play, which truly shows how essential the lady has grown over the years. Neatly shot by the BBC staff, the setlist matches the setting, with nearly half of the songs coming from her virtually solo album, "Uh Hu Her", released the same year. Even if PJ and her band are in great shape here, on a personal level, I must admit I rather go for the early period, the nineties, when Polly seemed to be like an untamed fearful kitten with an underlying rage hard to hold back. I last saw her in a festival (Werchter) in 2011. Polly was graceful as ever and the show ran flawless, no doubt, but the setlist would have certainly fitted better in a more intimate hall. Anyway, she's still today one not to be missed and this is why I've added a few extras (from the early nineties ! :-)) and more particularly, I think, one of the best cover ever made of a classic.

Enjoy !

Jesse Hugues is a real charm ! Even if the man is a living paradox, swinging between staunch catholicism, sins of the flesh and republican yearnings, it's hard not to like him. As he has often mentioned it, he's been blessed and saved by some rock'n'roll god, ... though, I guess, he had certainly more the word "goddess" in mind when he said it  ! Helped in this by his long time schoolmate, Josh Homme (QOTSA), this rock'n'roll redemption has taken him from quite a personal misfortune to a limelight cheerfulness. This show is no exception to the rule. Even if it was my second one in a week (Pukkelpop before) and the setlist was pretty much the same, I couldn't but enjoy again the open generosity of "the devil" and his goblins. Again, the gig was full of student-like pranks and spirit and interaction with the crowd. This is exactly what gives this rock'n'roll and infectious fun flavour to EODM's shows. After all these years, no doubt Jesse hasn't forgotten where he's coming from and the blessing he's been living since he got out of it. In a way, he's still  like the boy who greedily tears away the wrapping paper from the gifts under the christmas tree. Keep it up, Jesse !
I've added a short interview made on the spot by the French radio, Le Mouv, since Jesse seems to hold some people in his heart from this radio, as he mentioned it during the show.

Enjoy !
Cheers !

Ghostly larsen lovers, this is for you !
Hailed and praised many times on this blog, here is at last a full cracking show by the electrifying and irreverent JC Satan. From the rock shaking town of Bordeaux (F), the band formed by two Italian-Argentinian girls and three French guys delivers a rough primitive sound, often associated to garage rock and to their lavish American counterparts, the Thee Oh Sees. However, they single out through Paula's often incantatory and full of reverb voice and from a kind of  religious and heroic fantasy inspiration.
All this can be checked out in the video excerpt below with the intoning "Hell Death Samba", kind of scary nursery rhyme, and with the extended version of "Your Are Good, I'm Not Bad" during which, after a short introducing lull, the thunderstorm is no doubt hitting hard Arthur's Gretsch again !
I've added a few extras, among which you'll find an interview of the band about their early budding years and their future prospects. I couldn't grab the English subtitles but if you're interested in, you can watch what it is like here : http://www.the-drone.com/magazine/j-c-sat%C3%A0n/
Anyway, great band. I can't wait to see them again, twice in november ! :-)

Enjoy !

The " Fluorescent Adolescents" are well gone. The kids have come a long way. They all live in LA now and the bald eagle has clearly a hold on their last lp on the very day of its release and of this show. For better or  worse ? To each his own. Even if he wasn't the exclusive producer for this one, Josh Homme's influence can still  be felt, making some featuring here and there. Funny this recent similar fondness for playing the crooner ("If I Had A Tail" / "One For The Road " for example) Personally, not my favourite craze but I must admit it's nice to see both bands still on the move, going forward. Voluntary change is certainly better than resigned immobilism.

Enjoy !

Dark have been the times for the Queens over the past few years, particularly for their frontman, Josh Homme. On the brink of breaking up and throw everything away "with the flow" and even if they worked  hard not to come to this, they couldn't manage but to leave their faithful and imposing drummer, Joey Castillo, off the track. Over this split, personal health problems and a subsequent new questionning, the future seemed quite dark and gloomy for the band. An indeed, the new album is breathing out a scent of dumps and introspection, a far cry from the long awaited expectattions of the fans. But Josh Homme is not the kind of man to give way to resignation and their last release has some kind of cracked consistency, a true rendering of the doubts and inner turmoil of the time. What remained unclear was how it would all come out on stage. Here we have some kind of answer with a good balance between intimate self-awareness expression ("The Vampyre of Time and Memory"") and vintage lifeblood deflagration ("Millionaire"). Josh even looks in a good mood, appreciating and being quite affable and grateful for the rousing welcome they're receiving. A nice mix between the old and the new Queens Of The Stone Age. And for the fans who still miss "Songs For The Deaf", well, who knows ... there may be hope, ... someday !! "Tah-daaah !!!" ;-)

Enjoy !

******************** UPDATE - new link for DVD 2 above : ********************

It's been a while now the shapeshifting Archive has been spreading his delicate alchemy of lull and thunder over the world. The glossy magic is still operating here with this last concert of their 2012 French tour. As usual, the show is brilliantly orchestrated and the multi voiced performance is elegantly brightened up by their new singer, Holly Martin, who were only five where the band started playing in 1994. So, as shown in the extract below (pure beauty !), just enjoy this over 2 hour goose pimples thrill in front of a devoted audience, well aware of the precious moment they're living.

I'd been undecided for quite a long time whether I would go or not to Pinkpop this year. The line up was tempting, Queens Of The Stone Age, Triggerfinger, ... ! I eventually stayed home, The Netherlands mean quite a long drive from here, but I didn't miss the live stream of one of my favourite band. And, on that sunday evening, they were once again impressively awesome !! They had been on a touring break for about 2 months and I was looking forward to seeing what they were up to and if they had any new material. I didn't get disappointed. The new song, "Attitude For Darkness" is quite engaging, based on an old school rock boogie riff that passed through the audience just like another great Triggerfinger's nugget. But the masterpiece of the show is no doubt "My Baby's Got A Gun". I've seen Triggerfinger quite a few times, live and on screen, and this number is not my fav of the last album, but I must admit that, here, the band delivered a devil possessed version of the track. Mario and Mr Paul's rhythm section is pounding as ever, Ruben's voice is at his top and his circular-saw riffs rip the song apart all the way (as you can hear below from the soaring take-off at 2'48) ! Looks like Mario is particularly keen on being back on stage too, when you see him screaming, licking his cymbals, leaving his drum kit behind to swagger  in front of the stage or else, tapping on glasses, on a bottle of wine and a Pinkpop bedside lamp on "I Follow Rivers" !
On top of that, our three shooters showed up in a very elegant pink suit to pay tribute to the festival (look at Mr Paul's "gold plated" shoes too !). Very smart ! At last, thank you Dutch fans for being so warm and responsive to the band and for making then this concert so intense. I am along with you with all the "beste band van pinkpop 2013 !" that sprang up on the web after the show. I wish they could get this rousing welcome here ! "Soon", I hope ...
I've added a few extras, from the same day and from an "old" early period !

Hope you'll enjoy !

Cheers !

Putting The Hives in a 300-capacity hall is just like stroking a tiger in an elevator. This may be shaking a bit ! This one is no exception to the rule and here again, the band unleashes the beast for a "secret" show in the overcrowded and cramped Studio, at the Webster Hall, New York, just after the release of  their first album in five years. And they're damn starving ! No holding back here. Pelle's banter hasn't toned down with the years and he is still this so brilliant / arrogant swaggerer ("this stage might not be big enough for my ego"), asking the audience to feel his hand, diving several times in the audience while his brother is licking the mic and thrusting his head in the arms of the first row ! On the telluric "Tick Tick Boom", down in the middle of  a parted audience, he even challenged the crowd to “crush him like an ant” before he made it back to the stage. Wish granted !
Anyway, if you have never seen a storm in a matchbox, this is the show !!
To stick to the same soaked in sweat atmosphere, I've added three songs of their gig in the hall of a French radio, even smaller than the Webster's !
At last, you will find a funny and howlin' bonus, in which you can notice that "to pelle" really means "to swagger" !!

On a technical side, this one really gave me hard time The Oüi FM part came out systematically mute. After many many attempts and long encoding hours under different formats, I had to inexplicably remove the interview that came after the Webster show to make everything work . Weird ! Anyway, this is original HD. I managed to trim off the commercials but I couldn't crop the upper banner without re-encoding and coming out with a much bigger file.

Enjoy !
