Something strange happened. I'm listening to the Pixies again. Digging in my antique attic shoebox of late 80s cassettes. I must confess I've forgotten both of them, Pixies and reels together. Maybe partly because I always felt a bit confused by the band, getting in turn thrilled and in love with some songs and then puzzled by others. Or was it because of the relatively short career of the band that didn't really give me time to get into it ? Many lame reasons I guess. You can be proud Mr Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV, your 2004 joke (cf interview / Primavera Sound) hit the mark.
Of course, Kim, the real tinkerbell pixie of the band has recently ditched the whole thing and even if she's "irreplaceable" (quoting the band's words), Paz Lenchantin (God ! What a sweet name !) has gently fitted in and is definitely not out of tune or the odd woman out. She seems to be very nice and the right person for the job. I would say she even brings a sort of light touch of ballerina grace I would never have thought the Pixies would be associated with one day.
The question remains : What for ? Fun or money ? - The band has never cheated on the fact that money, and its subsequent comfortable touring conditions, did play a part in the reunion. But the Pixies played over 120 gigs last year and have just announced an American tour and new songs in the making. Looking back at the sad and bitter 1993 split, I guess they couldn't have done and won't do all this without a spark of rekindled fun.
The release of "Indy Cindy", their first album within 23 years (!), didn't help freshen up the band to some well-informed reviewers, though. The "one too many" syndrome has often been mentioned. Well, ... to each his own. "Indy Cindy" is definitely no revolution but sounds Pixies for sure (been hooked on "Magdelena" for a while now ! :-))
Anyway, I hesitated for long on what to put on this one. Much old stuff has already been officially and gradually released over their long off-studio pause. I finally picked the VPRO studio show in its original TV format (no youtube) for the classic non-official vintage material. But I also wanted to show what the Pixies are like today, particularly here with the concert they gave last summer at the Hurricane festival where they played in the golden light of a nice setting sun (the only one I got so ! the band often hitting the main stage in the night as a headliner now !). 17 songs in one hour. Mr Black is still so talkative between songs !!
As bonus, I've included 3 songs and short interview from the Primavera Sound which was shown on TV as part of a whole about the festival. The interview is conducted by the Belgian singer-actress Helena Noguerra (also singer-actress Lio's sister) who's wondering at the end of the conversation if, impressed enough, she hasn't turned too much red. Funny. I also kept the short interspaced insight of the festival at the end of "Where Is My Mind ?" with Boogers, a one-man band walking around the festival and covering the song. Nice but he's better on his "yellow" indie here ! ;-) Nice taking-off at 2:07 !
Also in the pack, 3 songs from Werchter 2014 (wicked version of "Tame" ! See below !) I haven't seen on any other tracker.

Hope you'll enjoy ! This one was pretty rough to make, with many technical glitches and hitches I still really can't track back the origin. I think I need a break from authoring ! :-)

Cheers !

In a punk mood today. Back to ... ? Straight ahead, for once ! Here's the fast and boisterous "White Lung", from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. I think my first memory of the band gets back to a couple of weeks before a concert of Duchess Says, another Canadian band, who played round here a while ago. I was already fan of Duchess (maybe one day on this blog ... !) and its nice and crazy singer, Annie-Claude. While documenting a few weeks before the show, I came to that poster from a past tour they teamed up with their White Lung fellows. I ventured on and went  into it straight away. The howling "know my right" voice of Mish, the intricate dripping and jolting sound of Kenneth's guitar, the fast headlong punk pace of Anne-Marie's drumming. Danger and urgency were back and it felt good !
The band has recently signed to Domino Records, which gives them, though still independent, a wider exposure. All credit however first goes to their latest album, "Deep Fantasy", a 10-track-22-minute ball of fire which, over the weeks, has stealthily reached the honours of the ritual "50 albums of the year", ranking # 32 for "Pitchfork", # 6 for "Stereogum",  # 3 for "Rolling Stones" and even n° 1 favourite album of 2014 for "Brooklyn Vegan" ! More, the sophisticated mad-twisting play of Kenneth has at last deservedly come to reviewers ' ears and consideration, ranking 14th in the best guitar player of the year chart of "GuitarPlanet" mag. But maybe, what strikes first and most, listening to White Lung, is Mish Way's voice. It's not flawless and some may not like it but it totally fits the music played here with loud and clear "don't mess with me-fuck off" spit and snarl. Mish knows her stuff, wears the pants and has her own views on life, certainly fuelled by journalism studies, active blogging, columnist work in "Self Titled " magazine and in "Ask Mish" for Vice website, where she even sometimes turns into a kind of sex advisor (!). Of course, feminism can be heard here but is never exclusive. The band has also often been associated to the riot grrrl movement. However, Mish, Anne-Marie, Hether and Kenneth don't seem to give a sh... to tight bloody tags. They make their own way. Make them your own !

Enjoy !

Cheers !

Just before coming to "Je me perds", their last song of their Pukkelpop 2012 set, Laura-Mary from Blood Red Shoes is letting out a rousing and loud "This is for Wallace Vanborn, the best band, in Belgium" (you can hear it here on the video extract of the show at the BRS section). The two bands obviously hit it off during their common tour. That's obvious in this dvd when Ian Clement is invited to play a noisy "Colours Fade" with the band, starting with a funny "take over" joke from Steven.
Anyway, I don't know if Wallace Vanborn is the best band in Belgium but what I'm pretty sure about is the highly talented rock scene of the country : Arno, Deus, Triggerfinger, Wallace Vanborn, K’s Choice, Millionaire, Soulwax, 2 Many DJs, Goose, Drive Like Maria, The Black Box Revelation, Psycho 44, The Van Jets, BRNS, Puggy, The Experimental Tropic Blues Band, Vive La Fête, Steak n°8, Creature With The Atom Brain, ... The list seems endless and you are hardly disappointed pricking up your ears at them. So many interesting bands in so different styles.
This is precisely while scouring the intense and lively summer festival scene of the country I first met Wallace Vanborn. It was back in 2012, Pukkelpop again, at the famous "Wablief ?!" tent, where you can enjoy the gifted local bands. 2 years later, they opened the festival, hitting the main stage, which is truly deserved. As often experienced, and even if an early rising always means a deep self-sacrifice in festivals (!), bands scheduled first in the day are often not to be missed. This is once more the case here. The audience is predictably scarce at noon (see before !) but it grew all along the set and the threesome delivered a powerful stoner performance. On a side note, they opened the show with a new song (see the video below) that was to feature on their forthcoming new album, "The Orb We Absorb",  due in October, and which was recorded right in the middle of the stoner nebula : at the infamous "Rancho De La Luna" (Queens Of The Stone Age, Eagles Of Death Metal, Foo Fighters, PJ Harvey ..) under the lead of a no less notorious producer  : Chris Goss (Masters Of Reality).
As often, I've added a few extras from other shows, including the Blood Red Shoes piece and the inescapable cover of Iggy's "I Wanna Be Your Dog".
I couldn't get my hands on a decent live version of "Rover" from the first album, but if you still don't know this great number, you can have a quick first listen to it in the menus ! Don't miss the band when they come to town !

Enjoy !

Cheers !

Blood always tells.
When you open for such tutelary figures as Queens Of The Stone Age, Jello Biafra, The Melvins, Iggy Pop, The Flaming Lips, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Dead Weather, ... ;
When you have Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill) as a personal hero and are first spotted by Omar Rodriguez Lopez (At The Drive In / Mars Volta) during a dark power-cut set in Guadalajara ;
When you team up with this same Omar Rodriguez Lopez to play in a band called Bosnian Rainbows and got into another side-project with John Frusciante (RHCP) called Kimono Kult ... ;
When you have Henry Rollins and Shirley Manson featuring on your last album ...;
let be honest, you just can't be on the wrong track !
Teri Gender Bender is not and her band, "Le Butcherette" is no exception to the rule either. First formed at an early age in Guadalajara, the band has constantly been fuelled by Teri's rage, especially against women discrimination and male chauvinism in Mexico. At that time, back in 2009, her performances often included pig's head, broom, bloody butcher's apron (still today's outfit) to denounce "the piece of meat" image women were often associated to and she had been confronted to too often in her country. Without being exclusive, her feminist cause first rallied her friend and gorgeous drummer Auryn Jolene for crazy and high-energy sets, where they were often just considered as"clowns" and received petty coins, thrown at them by the male audience. To find decent footage from this era is quite hard and the material is usually shaky and rough. Though, I decided to keep a couple of them here just to feel the wild energy spurting out their shows. Teri was just over 20 in those days !
The band has gone through many line-ups since, especially when Teri decided to migrate to LA to give the band the opportunity to be appreciated for what it's worth. Omar Rodrigez Lopez helped a lot, becoming their producer and bass player. Teri is now joined on stage by Lia Braswell on drums and Chris Common on bass. The lunatic intensity is still raging but more, Teri's voice has grown bigger in her variety and mastery. You can't miss it out on her last release, "Cry Is For The Flies", one of the greatest albums of 2014, no doubt !!
True, one can't help thinking of a new PJ Harvey, but while Polly has this rage boiling underneath, Teri just lets it go all the way, making her shows looking more like an unleashed set of Iggy Pop, who himself is a fan !
I've tried to find watchable live bits, for lack of a complete show (if anyone has one, let me know ...), mostly pro or semi-pro shot but as I've already said, I've sometimes kept some rougher material just to live the electrifying atmosphere as one can experience, in the moshpit, at Teri's feet ...

Enjoy,

Cheers !

New links available above (part 16 was presumably down - thanx squarelf for letting me know !)

October was the month of my first Ty Segall gig. A long awaited date and a red-letter night no doubt. More, buy one, get two : the young Californian gifted man was sharing the stage with the thunderous Triggerfinger ! That was quite a thrilling deal !! You can't get enough of the Belgian power trio and even it was my third encounter with the shooters within 3 months, they still ranked first that night on my wishing list. I felt a bit muzzy and hazy about Ty Segall, being lost in his prolific album & EP releases and his fecund multifaceted incarnations. Even if I kept up with the man, I didn't really know where to start from and I had eventually turned lazy on his production. I was wrong ! What we attended that night was a real electric blitzkrieg pouring down hard on us !! In the middle of this fuzz-glam-garage-punk storm, the great synthesizer wizzard, Ty Segall in his dungaree, shouting, wriggling and trying to tame his wild uncontrollable guitar. Really impressive !! Definitely one of the most electric blast with such a variety I've seen this year.
I've included some parts of that gig as extras on the dvd below but the big chunk is made of the special psyche-garage night that was held at "La Villette Sonique Festival" in the early days of june in Paris. That night, Ty Segall Band were  playing along with The Coachwhips and Man Or Astro-Man. With such a line-up and as it is clear and obvious all the way on this dvd : the music is loud, the atmosphere is sweaty and the shoes of the man standing next to you are flying high in the moshpit !

Enjoy !

Cheers !

I've never been a great fan of the The Distillers' early hardcore punk. I guess I must be more somewhere between their subsequent high-energy spits and the dark legions of Spinnerette that followed next. But I must admit it felt good to see Brody back to business last summer. From the recent interviews given after the release of her last lp, she seems to have at last found a kind of inner peace, away from the torments of The Distillers' break-up and the hollow years of Spinnerette. Oddly enough, even if this era gave her hard times, Spinnerette's only album still keeps me under its spell today. By the way, if anyone has a decent pro-shot of the band at that time, please feel free to share it ! I've only been able to find the short Lowlands acoustic session.
Anyway, it's nice to hear again Brody's vicious voice, still loud, clear and croaky, shouting out on different stages in the world. All this led me to pay a humble tribute to the lady here. Some parts have already been issued here and there, others haven't, like personal footage of her recent show in Paris, during the "Rock En Seine" festival. Hope you'll enjoy ...

Among all the Triggerfinger's shows waiting on the shelves at home, this one is certainly not the best in picture quality but has something special in the conditions it was held. On this clear day of early july, the national Belgian football team was meeting Argentina for their quarter final of the world cup. Of course, Triggerfinger was due to play right at the time of the match ! Being afraid to perform in front of a not so big audience (and maybe also to miss the match !) the band  asked the festival management team to put off their show later in the day. Their offer was eventually put down and they hit the stage to see that their Belgian fellows had finally made the right choice ! And they were damn right ! The band is in good mood and in great shape here. The set is definitely high-energy, particularly thanks to the awesome solo on "My Baby's Got A Gun", "Camaro" and "All This Dancin' Around" !
However, the bunch wasn't totally cut off from the match ! At some points of the show, two lovely babes nicely popped up on stage, waving and holding high a placard mentioning the score of the match. Unfortunately for Belgium this time, their team lost but Triggerfinger certainly eased the pain !
Another reason why this dvd is a bit off the beaten track is that for the first time, I've added some personal footage of some shows I attended this summer. Indeed, I was lucky enough to see our shooters twice within 3 weeks in quite "intimate" festivals, especially the Cosmopolite one at which they played a not so common "Splendor In The Grass" from the last album, after a show at Lowlands the day before and another one in ... Budapest, at Sziget, the day after !! Good God, who's their booker ?!
Their Cosmopolite show was also somehow sprinkled with mishaps (see their Facebook for details, particularly the one about Mario's trousers ! :-)). That's why, I've also included a funny version of "Cherry" whose opening taking-off part was obviously giving hard time to Ruben, which really made his two friends laugh (see below for a glimpse) !
This is precisely what I love in this band. Above their unquestionable talent, skills and style as musicians, they have managed to keep this pleasure and fun to play together as well as their capacity to wonder ! This is what makes their concerts so enjoyable and different every time.
Of course, here, in this "Bonus" part, the framing is less "pro" and not free from shouts, jiggles, comments and cheers (including mine ...) but the image quality is clear and hd.
Anyway, these two shows in 3 weeks showed again the band is worth the drive to go and see them and I have already filled the tank up for their next extensive-intensive tour in October-December, 50 shows in 14 different countries ! Don't miss them !

Enjoy !

Cheers !
